Why The Wednesday Press exists—and what you can expect from us

An independent publication for people who enjoy thinking about Wednesday as much as talking about them.

There is usually plenty to say about Wednesday. Finding something useful to add takes a little more work.

The Wednesday Press begins with a modest aim: give supporters writing worth spending time with. That might be a clear account of a match, an explanation of a tactical detail or a story about the people who arrange their lives around the club. We want a reader to leave an article knowing something they did not know when they opened it.

We are an independent publication, with no affiliation to or endorsement from Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. Supporting the team does not require us to agree with every decision. It does require us to treat the subject, and the people involved, with care.

Expect match coverage that gets to the point, opinion with an argument behind it and analysis that explains something about the football. A headline should earn its promise by the end of the article. If a story is thin, adding another five paragraphs will not improve it.

We will label opinion clearly and check factual claims before publication. Strong criticism belongs here when it is deserved. So does praise, without the need to turn every good performance into a declaration that all the problems have gone away.

If we get something wrong, email editor@thewednesdaypress.co.uk with the article title and the point that needs checking. We will review it and explain substantive corrections on the article. News can develop after publication; that is a reason to update a story clearly, not quietly rewrite its history.

There is plenty we hope to build. For now, we would rather earn your attention one piece at a time. Read something, disagree with it if you wish, and tell us what we should be looking at next.
